What is the Blue Ridge Institute?

"Peopleizing" Services a la Blue Ridge
by Harold J. Weekley, 1914-98

Operated by Volunteers - Incorporated

Blue Ridge is the oldest continuing Institute of its kind in the country. It is totally operated by volunteers. Each year many "Blue Ridgers" have given generously of their time and money to make the organization productive. The Board of Directors of more than 40 persons meets in Atlanta during early December, in addition to meeting while at Blue Ridge in July. Several times suggestions were made that it should be incorporated, but no one took the time to follow through on the legal steps that would be necessary.

However, during 1982, Myles MacDonald (29th President of Blue Ridge) did much work that led to incorporation of Blue Ridge Institute and Blue Ridge Institute Development Fund: for tax purposes the Institute and the Fund were established separately. Both are now Tennessee not-for-profit general welfare corporations. The Institute was approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization 501 (c) (4). The Development fund has been approved by IRS as a tax-exempt organization eligible to receive tax deductible contributions 501 (c)(3). An employer identification number has been issued for each. The Fund is a publicly supported organization, described in IRS Section 509 (a)(2).
