What is the Blue Ridge Institute?
"Peopleizing" Services a la Blue Ridge
by Harold J. Weekley, 1914-98
Blue Ridge Archives Maintained
As part of the 50th Anniversary a special committee, with Lester H. Robb (1951 and 1952 Institute President) as the leader, established the repository of Blue Ridge Institute papers and other records over 50 years, at the Florida State University Library at Tallahassee. A special grant of $5,000 from the federal department of HEW made possible special research through the FSU School of Social Work, to pull together the 50-year record of Blue Ridge. Longtime Blue Ridger, Dr. Coyle Moore, retired Dean of the FSU School of Social Work, persuaded the school leadership to take on this project. Under the tutelage of Dr. Lelia Deasy, students researched the records and Dr. Deasy presented to the 50th Institute group a summary of the program highlights of 50 years. As the keynote speaker at the opening session on Sunday evening, Earle Lippincott, former Blue Ridge consultant, worked with FSU and added his observations on the significance of Blue Ridge Institute to the national social work community.
The outstanding compilation of records, which have been added to following each annual Institute, provides great research materials for years to come. The materials consist mainly of the proceedings of the Institute, presentations not included in the proceedings but presented at the Institute, programs, invitations, correspondence, background material, photographs and related material. The historical documents are available for research purposes to anyone by contacting the FSU library.
